Beautiful video of the rare and emblematic huemul deer recently filmed in Cerro Castillo National Park in Chilean Patagonia by Rody Álvarez, a member of the rewilding team of our strategic partners, Tompkins Conservation Chile.

With careful monitoring, the rewilding team is learning a lot about this endangered deer! The huemul have a marked preference for lenga (southern beech) forest and ñirre scrub environments that also encompass rocky areas and steep slopes, providing a greater diversity of plant species to feed on and less risk of predation.  Both male and female huemul are territorial, forming small family groups.

Under natural conditions, The huemul has evolved along fox and puma for over ten thousand years, and the deer have behavior strategies that allow them to evade these principal predators: the fox and the puma.  For healthy and functioning ecosystems, these natural predator – prey relationships will continue, while our strategic partners work to expand habitat for the huemul, and reduce “unnatural” risks to the deer, like predation by dogs and illegal hunting.   For more information, follow @tompkinsconservationchile
