Cooperative-Existence, or coexistence, is a concept essential to humans on earth as we unwittingly and intentionally outcompete our wild neighbors for resources. Coexistence with the wild demands from our kind the wisdom of conservatism, not fiscal or religious or cultural but a biocentric conservatism that honors the rights of nonhumans as well as the rights of humans to live in a world still hospitable to life itself. I created this illustration for @cougarconservancy to celebrate mountain lions, such as Hollywood-famous P-22, but also so many countless and nameless individuals struggling to survive the Anthropocene – a phase in our planet’s history that has seen unfathomable numbers of life forms sacrificed on the altar of “Progress.” If there’s anything I’ve learned from the horrific unfolding of our species’ latest chapter (i.e. COVID 19 & the rise of authoritarianism/fascism), it is that we must fight to protect what we hold dear. The fight needs artists, scientists, influencers, folx working behind the scenes, activists, parents, youths, leaders, and followers.
