A cat’ s 🐱 whiskers are filled with sensory nerve endings called Merkel cells.
These cells and a cluster of nerve endings at the base of the whisker can detect changes in air 🌬 flow within the cat’ s surroundings. This allows them to sense nearby objects and prey 🐇 🐿. The unique adaptation of a whisker allows these cats to excel as nocturnal hunters 🌝. What is crazy is that a mountain lion’ s whiskers don’ t even need to make physical contact with an object in order to sense it! 😱
